- If you have time to plan your departure, you may want to consider removing all of your personal and household possessions, even if you need to put them in storage for a while.
- You can take anything that was yours prior to the relationship. You have a right to part of the furniture and other household items (fridge, washing machine etc) to meet day to day needs of you and your children.
- Keep in mind that essential items like the fridge and the washing machine are expensive to replace.
- You can take any money you need to support yourself and your children from available joint accounts. If you take more than your share, you will be required to pay it back.
- If you can, take children's beds, toys, clothes, and school things.
- Remember irreplaceable items like photographs and mementos.
NOTE: All property that you jointly own is subject to property settlement. This means that you may ultimately not be able to keep some of these items, or the value of these items will be taken into consideration during property settlement.
