Definitions of Domestic Violence |
Domestic Violence describes a situation where one person in a relationship is using violence and/or intimidation tactics to control and dominate another person. The National Committee on Violence Against Women (NCVAW) defined domestic violence as violence and abuse perpetrated by a man upon a female to control his victim, which results in physical, sexual and/or psychological damage, forced social isolation or economic deprivation, or behaviour which leaves a woman living in fear. While physical assault is often the most obvious form of abuse, it is important to acknowledge that other forms of abuse are just as devastating. Fear and isolation are particularly powerful in preventing women from leaving a violent relationship. Indeed many women do not admit to the extent of the abuse because their partner blames them for the abuse and extended family or community attitudes condone the use of violence against them. |
